21:48 heap_ hi, does anybody use cubox with esata + external hdd box for NAS and using encryption? or anny suggestion for good lowpower pc for that?
22:17 cbxbiker61 i've tested the cubox/esata/external jbod and it seemed to work just fine
22:18 cbxbiker61 the quad core should handle encryption without problem
22:26 heap_ cbxbiker61: i have cubox pro / old one
22:27 cbxbiker61 it should still work fine
22:27 heap_ cbxbiker61: can you provide more details? what xternal jbod/ how many hdd/ what ecnrpytion etc
22:27 cbxbiker61 i didn't test encryption
22:27 heap_ hmhm
22:28 cbxbiker61 i tested a jbod with a 6G backplane and a couple of 3T drives
22:28 cbxbiker61 of course the cubox/cubox-i are limited to 3G interface
22:29 cbxbiker61 as long as you don't expect it to work like a bit x86_64 machine it works fine
22:29 cbxbiker61 bit/big
22:29 cbxbiker61 it would easily handle streaming video for example
22:29 heap_ well im interested if there wont be any drastical speed reduction when i put encryption on
22:30 cbxbiker61 the original cubox has hardware encryption capability
22:30 heap_ cubox-i doesnt?
22:30 cbxbiker61 it does also
22:31 cbxbiker61 but in both cases the code doesn't get tested a lot
22:31 heap_ so thats not good :)
22:31 heap_ i expecting working solution
22:31 heap_ :)
22:31 heap_ im
22:31 cbxbiker61 it all depends on how capable you are
22:32 cbxbiker61 the easy route is alway to do what "most" people do
22:32 heap_ well i need NAS with encrpytion :)
22:33 cbxbiker61 i had hardware encryption working on the original cubox, then somewhere along the line they broke the kernel code and i haven't tested recently
22:34 cbxbiker61 how much bandwidth do you need? 20MB/sec...
22:34 heap_ cbxbiker61: yes around 20mb/s is fine
22:35 heap_ if more it is plus
22:35 cbxbiker61 my hunch is that the original cubox would handle 20MB with encryption regardless of whether it does it in hardware
22:35 heap_ based on what?
22:36 cbxbiker61 hardware enc will not necessarily make it faster, it'll just lower the CPU utilization
22:36 heap_ so does esata
22:37 cbxbiker61 i'd say get the jbod, i'll recomend a unit if you're interested, then you can test it and put it on a different computer if it doesn't meet your needs
22:37 heap_ yes, ill appreciate
22:38 heap_ for any recommendation
22:42 cbxbiker61 sans-digital tr5m6g is what i have, the 6g part indicates that it has a 6G backplane, which would be useful if you attach it to a computer with a 6G sata
22:49 bewees I guess i.MX6 (ARM Cortex-A9 Core) doesn't support ECC. Will there be a future cubox with ecc support?
22:51 cbxbiker61 i can't answer for solid-run specifically, but i wouldn't expect ecc on arm processors other than those intended for servers, which are pretty sparse at the moment
22:51 heap_ cbxbiker61: i need it only for cubox-esata-external box for hdds with esata
22:52 cbxbiker61 ?
22:53 bewees There are quiet some ARM archs supporting ECC thoug http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ARM_microarchitectures
22:53 bewees I think ECC should be used for consumer systems too and not only in server farms
22:54 cbxbiker61 bewees, yes it may be useful....but people are generally more interested in system cost, hence why so few desktops have ecc
22:56 heap_ cbxbiker61: ops sorry :)
22:58 heap_ cbxbiker61: its pretty expensive
22:59 heap_ 357 punds
22:59 cbxbiker61 yeah, it's not cheap, but it should have a long useful life
22:59 heap_ hmhm something cheaper ? 4 slots enought
23:00 cbxbiker61 well you could go for the 4 disk model that doesn't support 6G
23:00 cbxbiker61 i went for 6G so i don't feel inclined to replace it for a long time
23:01 heap_ do you need 6g?
23:02 cbxbiker61 it is of no value attached to a cubox, but it would be if you ended up reusing it on for example an x86 machine
23:02 heap_ so the speed rapidly grow up?
23:03 cbxbiker61 a "current" x86 machine, since even on x86 the e-sata's were generally limited to 3G
23:04 heap_ so its its limited why u need 6g?
23:04 heap_ brbr
23:04 heap_ for x64;?
23:05 cbxbiker61 i have a server box that has 6G e-sata, so if i attach to that it's faster, specifically if it's doing raid
23:06 cbxbiker61 i don't like replacing hardware often
23:06 heap_ ah ok... so any suggestion for 3g one?
23:07 cbxbiker61 just search sans digital on amazon
23:08 heap_ different brand is not good investment?
23:09 cbxbiker61 i can't answer that, i did quite a bit of research beforehand, i'm sure something else may work too
23:10 heap_ research based on?
23:10 cbxbiker61 part of it was that i liked the disk layout in the enclosure
23:10 cbxbiker61 easy to swap disks, some of the cheap ones are a pain
23:12 heap_ nice
23:26 foresto heap_, I haven't tested any of them, but amazon also has sata enclosures by StarTech.com, Mediasonic, and Vantec.
